CHEVENING Program
Assess your chances
Definition
Chevening is the UK government's prestigious scholarship for one-year Master's study at eligible universities across the United Kingdom. Established in 1983, the programme supports future leaders from more than 160 countries and territories by fully funding postgraduate study in the UK. Scholars may apply to a wide range of eligible one-year taught Master's programmes, including courses at Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, and UCL.
Key Benefits
Fully funded by the UK government. Chevening covers university tuition, travel to and from the UK, one visa application, arrival and departure allowances, and a monthly living stipend.
Monthly living stipend. A personal allowance to cover accommodation and day-to-day expenses throughout your studies. The amount varies depending on whether you're based in London or elsewhere in the UK.
Arrival and departure support. One-off allowances to help with the costs of settling in and wrapping up at the end of the programme.
Freedom to choose your university and course. Applicants select three different eligible UK Master's programmes across a wide range of universities and fields.
A powerful global alumni network. Over 60,000 Chevening alumni worldwide, including ministers, CEOs, and senior leaders across many sectors.
Exclusive access throughout the year. Scholars take part in networking events, leadership opportunities, and engagements with UK institutions during their time in the country.
You can apply more than once. If you're not selected in one cycle, you're welcome to apply again in future years, provided you still meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Who It's For
    • citizens of Chevening-eligible countries and territories, including Kazakhstan
    • professionals with at least 2,800 hours of work experience completed after graduation
    • candidates with clear leadership potential and a genuine commitment to creating positive change at home
    • Bachelor's graduates whose degree qualifies them for entry to a UK Master's programme
    • applicants prepared to return to their home country for at least two years after the scholarship ends
    • those who have not previously studied in the UK on a UK government-funded scholarship
    • ambitious professionals ready for a highly competitive selection process
  • Age Range
Chevening has no formal age limits. The question is whether you meet the academic and professional eligibility criteria.

In practice, many successful applicants are professionals in their mid-20s to mid-30s, but the programme places far more weight on leadership potential, professional achievements, and clarity of purpose than on age.

A strong profile and a convincing story matter far more than when you were born.
When to Start
Ideally, preparation should begin 9–12 months before the application deadline
This gives you enough time to:
  • build or confirm the required 2,800 hours of post-graduation work experience
  • choose three eligible UK Master's programmes
  • prepare strong essays and references
  • meet the English-language requirements of your chosen universities — Chevening no longer sets its own separate language requirement
  • secure at least one unconditional offer from one of your chosen courses by the official deadline
A workable minimum is 4–6 months, if you already have:
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience
  • a clear academic direction
  • a strong professional and leadership track record
  • a plan for meeting your target universities' language requirements
Important: Successful interview candidates must submit at least one unconditional offer by 9 July 2026 at 17:00 BST, with studies beginning in September/October 2026.
What's Included / How We Build the Path
Positioning and Strategy
At Lumos, we understand that Chevening isn't just a scholarship — it's an investment in future leaders.

The programme isn't looking for strong students alone. It's looking for people with proven leadership potential, the ability to build networks, and a credible, grounded vision for how they'll create impact after returning home.

That means your application can't lean on academic results alone. It needs to tell a coherent story: who you are, what you've already done, why this UK Master's matters right now, and how it connects to your long-term contribution.

Our strategy is built around your leadership narrative. We don't just compile documents — we identify the achievements, decisions, and patterns in your background that demonstrate influence, initiative, and potential, then build an application where every element supports that message.

We also work honestly. If your experience is too thin, your leadership examples are vague, or your goals aren't yet convincing, we'll tell you directly — and either help you strengthen your profile or point you toward alternatives where your chances are real.

One thing worth being clear about: Chevening scholars must return to their home country for at least two years after the award ends. If your immediate goal is to stay in the UK after graduation, this programme isn't the right fit.
