Internal Scholarships of Chinese Universities
Assess your chances
What These Are
Internal university scholarships are awarded directly by Chinese universities — separate from the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) — and offer a faster, more flexible route to funded study in China.

While CSC is administered centrally through government channels, internal scholarships are managed by each institution independently. This means a simpler application process, quicker decisions, and in many cases a more accessible entry point for strong candidates who may not meet the top-tier threshold for CSC.

Our Recommendation
Apply for CSC and internal university scholarships at the same time.

Internal scholarships serve as a strong backup if CSC is not awarded — and for certain fields, particularly arts and design, they are the primary route regardless.
  • Who These Scholarships Are For
    • students with a solid academic record — typically GPA 70%+ (3.5/5.0) — who may fall below the top 20% threshold required for CSC
    • candidates prepared to study in Chinese
    • those who want a faster review process without the full CSC bureaucracy
    • applicants with a strong interest in specific universities or regions in China
    • students from Central Asian countries, for whom dedicated scholarship quotas are often available
    • students from Belt & Road countries, who may qualify for additional funding of ¥15,000–18,000 per year
    • arts and design applicants, for whom internal university scholarships are often the primary or only realistic scholarship route
  • How They Differ from CSC
    • Internal university scholarships are generally less competitive than CSC and involve applying directly to the university rather than through a government portal. The review process is faster, and the range of available institutions is often broader and more flexible.
    • The main trade-off is that internal scholarships are frequently partial rather than fully funded — covering tuition or accommodation, but not always both. This makes understanding the specific package at each university an important part of the strategy.
  • Strategy
    • The strongest approach is to apply for CSC and internal university scholarships simultaneously. This maximizes your options and ensures you have a competitive fallback if the CSC route doesn't come through.
    • For arts and design candidates specifically, internal university scholarships are often the main — and sometimes only — viable scholarship pathway.
    • For students from Belt & Road countries, the additional annual funding of ¥15,000–18,000 can make internal scholarships particularly attractive even alongside a CSC application.
    • Want to know which universities and programmes fit your profile — and whether CSC, internal scholarships, or both make sense for your situation?
    • Book a consultation — we'll assess your academic background, identify the most realistic options, and build a clear application strategy for China.
