CHINESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP (CSC)
Assess your chances
Definition
The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) is China's state-funded scholarship for international students pursuing undergraduate, Master's, and doctoral study at more than 280 Chinese universities. The programme fully covers tuition, accommodation, and medical insurance, and provides a monthly stipend of ¥2,500–3,500 ($350–500). Its purpose is to strengthen cultural and educational ties between China and the rest of the world.
Key Benefits
Full Chinese government funding. Tuition, dormitory accommodation, medical insurance, and a monthly stipend of ¥2,500–3,500 are all covered.
Access to 280+ Chinese universities. Including top institutions such as Tsinghua, Peking University, Fudan, and Zhejiang University.
Study in English or Chinese. English-taught programmes are available without any Chinese language requirement, or with a one-year preparatory language course included.
Free one-year Chinese language preparation. If you choose a Chinese-taught programme, the language year is built into the scholarship.
All major academic levels covered. Undergraduate (4 years), Master's (2–3 years), doctoral (3–4 years), and language programmes.
More accessible than most Western scholarships. Competition is lower than for programmes like Fulbright or Erasmus Mundus, with realistic opportunities for applicants with GPAs from 3.0+.
Multiple application routes. Apply through bilateral agreements via an embassy (Bilateral Program), or directly to universities (Chinese University Program).
  • Who It's For
    • citizens of any country except China, applying for undergraduate, Master's, or doctoral study
    • high school graduates applying for Bachelor's programmes, Bachelor's graduates applying for Master's, and Master's graduates applying for PhD — with a solid academic record (GPA 3.0+ out of 5.0)
    • those prepared to study in Chinese — the programme covers one year of language preparation
    • those who want to study in English — hundreds of English-medium programmes are available, particularly in STEM, business, and medicine
    • students with limited budgets looking for a genuine, fully funded option with lower competition than Western routes
    • specialists in STEM, engineering, and medicine — fields China is actively investing in and prioritizing
    • those looking to build a career in Asia or with Chinese companies and institutions
  • Age Range
CSC does not set strict age limits. In practice:
    • Undergraduate: 18–25
    • Master's: 22–35
    • Doctoral: 25–40

The programme evaluates academic achievement and potential, not age. A strong profile and a clear academic purpose matter far more than your age — candidates over 35–40 with a serious plan are competitive.
When to Start
Ideally, preparation should begin 9–12 months before the deadline
This gives you enough time to:
  • choose universities and programmes — you can apply to 2–3 simultaneously
  • obtain a Pre-Admission Letter from a university (recommended, and often advantageous)
  • prepare your Study Plan (800–1,000 words for Master's/PhD)
  • collect and notarize documents (diplomas, transcripts)
  • prepare for any language requirements (IELTS, TOEFL, or HSK)
A workable minimum is 3–6 months, if you already have:
  • a clear university and programme shortlist
  • a supervisor contact in place (especially important for PhD)
  • documents ready (diploma, transcripts, recommendation letters)
  • a language certificate where required
Important: CSC deadlines typically fall between December and February. Don't leave it late.
What's Included / How We Build the Path
Positioning and Strategy
At Lumos, we see the Chinese Government Scholarship as one of the most accessible and realistic routes to fully funded international education available today.

Unlike Western programmes such as Fulbright or Erasmus Mundus — where competition is fierce and near-perfect profiles are expected — CSC gives candidates with GPAs of 3.0–3.5 and without a flawless résumé a genuine shot. China is actively seeking to attract international students, particularly in STEM, medicine, and engineering, and that works in your favor.

Our strategy is straightforward: one ambitious option (Tsinghua, Peking University, Fudan) alongside one or two more accessible institutions where your chances are stronger. Smart targeting beats blind ambition.

We work honestly. If your GPA falls below 2.5–3.0, your Study Plan isn't developed, or you're genuinely not prepared for life in China — the cultural adaptation, the language environment, the academic system — we'll tell you directly. CSC is realistic, but it still requires a well-prepared application and an honest assessment of fit.

One thing worth being clear about: unlike Fulbright or Bolashak, CSC carries no mandatory return obligation. After graduation, you're free to build your career in China, at home, or anywhere else.
