GLOBAL KOREA SCHOLARSHIP (GKS)
Assess your chances
Definition
The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is the fully funded scholarship programme of the Government of South Korea for international students pursuing undergraduate, Master's, and doctoral degrees at Korean universities. The programme covers tuition, airfare, medical insurance, and a monthly stipend. For most degree-track scholars, it also includes one year of Korean language training before the academic programme begins, unless the student already qualifies for an exemption through a sufficiently high TOPIK level. Applications are accepted through two main routes: Embassy Track and University Track.
Key Benefits
Full tuition coverage. GKS covers tuition fees for the entire duration of the degree programme.
Monthly stipend ₩900,000 per month for degree programmes; ₩1,500,000 per month for research programmes.
Round-trip airfare. Economy airfare to Korea at the start of the programme and return travel after completion, under programme rules.
Settlement allowance. An initial allowance is provided upon arrival to help with the cost of getting started.
One-year Korean language programme. Most scholars complete a funded Korean language course before beginning their degree, unless exempted through a qualifying TOPIK score.
Medical insurance. Health insurance is included as part of the scholarship package.
Degree completion and language incentives. Additional support — including graduation grants and Korean proficiency-related benefits — is available under the programme framework.
Two application routes. Apply through the Embassy Track or the University Track, depending on your profile and route availability.
Large global intake. Around 2,200 places for graduate programmes in the 2026 cycle, making this one of the more accessible fully funded scholarship routes in Asia.
  • Who It's For
    • applicants from countries designated under the GKS programme, including Kazakhstan
    • candidates who are not Korean citizens, and whose parents are also non-Korean citizens under the standard nationality rules
    • high school leavers applying for undergraduate study, Bachelor's graduates applying for Master's, and Master's graduates applying for doctoral programmes
    • students with a strong academic profile — typically meeting a minimum GPA threshold of 80% or top 20% of class, or the equivalent GPA standard
    • candidates prepared to study Korean, unless exempt through a qualifying TOPIK score
    • applicants not currently enrolled at a Korean university under ineligible categories defined in the guidelines
    • applicants who have not previously received GKS under disqualifying prior-award categories, except where the programme explicitly allows progression to a higher level
  • Age Range
GKS has strict age limits — these are formal eligibility conditions, not guidelines:
    • Undergraduate applicants: under 25
    • Graduate applicants: under 40

If you fall outside the limit for your intended level, this programme isn't the right route.
When to Start
Ideally, preparation should begin 9–12 months before the deadline
This gives you enough time to:
  • decide whether Embassy Track or University Track is the better fit
  • shortlist 2–3 Korean universities strategically
  • prepare apostilled or consular-confirmed academic documents
  • write a strong Personal Statement and Study Plan
  • secure recommendation letters
  • prepare for the embassy interview, if applying through Embassy Track
A workable minimum is 4–6 months, if you already have:
  • a strong GPA
  • translated and certified documents
  • a clear sense of your intended programmes
  • recommenders already identified
Важно: for the 2026 cycle, undergraduate online applications ran from 15–30 September 2025. Graduate deadlines vary by track — embassy-track timelines generally fall in February–March 2026, while university-track deadlines are usually earlier. Some embassies may require physical copies in addition to online submission. Always verify current deadlines with the relevant embassy or university.
What's Included / How We Build the Path
Positioning and Strategy
At Lumos, we see GKS as one of the strongest fully funded scholarship routes in Asia.

What makes it particularly attractive is the breadth of the package: tuition, monthly stipend, health insurance, airfare, a settlement allowance, and funded language training — all in one programme. Korea is also a world leader in STEM, engineering, technology, and business, making GKS especially valuable for candidates who want real exposure to a serious innovation ecosystem.

Our strategy focuses on three things.
  • First, eligibility discipline. If your GPA falls below the minimum competitive threshold, or you don't meet the nationality or age requirements, this route may not be realistic — and we'll tell you clearly.
  • Second, track choice and university mix. A smart, balanced list of universities matters more than chasing only the biggest names. Probability matters.
  • Third, narrative strength. Weak GKS applications tend to sound generic. Strong ones show academic purpose, genuine cultural seriousness, and a clear reason why Korea is the right fit for this candidate's long-term path.

One point worth being direct about: the one-year Korean language programme is not just a technical requirement. It reflects the programme's expectation of real academic and social integration. If you're completely unwilling to engage with that, GKS is probably not the right fit.
