MEXT SCHOLARSHIP (JAPANESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP)
Assess your chances
Definition
The MEXT Scholarship is the Japanese Government's fully funded scholarship for international students pursuing undergraduate, Master's, and doctoral study at Japanese universities. The scholarship covers tuition, entrance examination and admission fees, round-trip airfare, and a monthly stipend. Depending on the route and academic level, it may also include Japanese-language preparatory education before the degree programme begins. Applications are accepted through two main routes: Embassy Recommendation and University Recommendation.
Key Benefits
Full tuition coverage. MEXT waives entrance examination fees, admission fees, and tuition fees in full.
Monthly stipend. For the 2026 cycle: ¥117,000 per month for undergraduate students; ¥143,000 for preparatory or non-regular research students; ¥144,000 for Master's or professional degree students; and ¥145,000 for doctoral students. Additional regional supplements may apply in designated areas.
Round-trip airfare. International travel to Japan at the start of the programme and return travel at the end are both covered under MEXT rules.
International prestige. MEXT is one of the most established and widely recognized scholarship programmes in Asia — Japan's central government scholarship scheme for international students.
Access to leading Japanese universities. Through embassy or university recommendation, scholars may be placed at national, public, or private Japanese universities, depending on fit and selection outcomes.
Two application routes. Apply through a Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country, or through a Japanese university under the university-recommendation route.
Broad disciplinary coverage. MEXT supports a wide range of fields — from engineering and science to humanities and social sciences — depending on the category and institution.
  • Who It's For
    • non-Japanese nationals applying from outside Japan under the official eligibility rules
    • school leavers applying for undergraduate study, and Bachelor's or Master's graduates applying for research-based Master's or doctoral routes
    • applicants who meet the official age limits for their category
    • candidates with a strong academic record and, for research routes, a clear and detailed research plan
    • applicants prepared for embassy screening, which may include document review, language examinations, and an interview
    • research applicants ready to obtain a Letter of Provisional Acceptance from a Japanese university after passing the first screening under the embassy route
  • Age Range
MEXT has strict age requirements that vary by category — and these are non-negotiable eligibility criteria, not general guidelines.

For the 2026 undergraduate scholarship, applicants must in principle have been born on or after April 2, 2001. For the 2026 research-student scholarship, applicants must in principle have been born on or after April 2, 1991.

Age is one of the first things we check.
When to Start
Ideally, preparation should begin 12–18 months before the embassy deadline
This gives you enough time to:
  • decide whether the Embassy Recommendation or University Recommendation route is more realistic for you
  • identify suitable Japanese universities and programmes
  • develop a detailed Research Plan for graduate-level research routes
  • gather recommendation letters and academic documents
  • prepare for written exams and interviews where required by the embassy route
  • contact universities for a Letter of Provisional Acceptance after passing first screening, if applying through the embassy route
A workable minimum is 6–9 months, if your academic profile is already strong, your documents are in order, and your research or study direction is clear.
Important: Embassy deadlines are country-specific. The Embassy of Japan in Kazakhstan announced the 2026 undergraduate MEXT application with a document deadline of 30 May 2025. Always verify the current deadline directly with the embassy.
What's Included / How We Build the Path
Positioning and Strategy
At Lumos, we see the MEXT Scholarship as one of the strongest fully funded routes in Asia for serious academic candidates.

What makes it distinctive isn't just the funding — it's the structure of the process. This is not a scholarship you win with generic documents. It requires strong academic direction, a credible research or study plan, readiness for formal screening, and — for research applicants — the ability to move quickly and strategically after first screening to secure university acceptance.

Our strategy focuses on three things.
First, route clarity. Embassy and university recommendation are not interchangeable. The right route depends on your profile and circumstances.

Second, academic coherence. Your Research Plan or field-of-study statement has to hold up. It needs to show seriousness, genuine fit, and clear purpose.

Third, post-screening execution. Many candidates underestimate the Letter of Provisional Acceptance stage. We don't.

We work honestly. If your academic background isn't competitive enough, your research plan is vague, or you're not prepared for the discipline and structure of the Japanese academic environment, we'll tell you directly.

One more thing worth knowing: for research routes, the official guidelines describe 6 months of Japanese-language preparatory education where the accepting university deems it necessary. This isn't a formality — it's part of genuine integration into the system.
