STIPENDIUM HUNGARICUM
Assess your chances
Definition
Stipendium Hungaricum is the fully funded scholarship programme of the Hungarian Government for international students pursuing Bachelor's, Master's, one-tier Master's, and PhD studies at Hungarian higher education institutions. The scholarship covers tuition fees, provides a monthly stipend, accommodation support, and medical insurance. It operates through bilateral cooperation with sending partners in more than 100 countries and territories — including Kazakhstan — and offers around 900 full-degree programmes across a wide range of disciplines.
Key Benefits
Full tuition waiver. Scholarship holders pay no tuition fees for the entire duration of their programme.
Monthly stipend. For the 2026/27 cycle: HUF 43,700 per month for non-doctoral students; HUF 140,000 per month in the first phase and HUF 180,000 in the second phase for doctoral students.
Accommodation support. Students receive either a dormitory place or HUF 40,000 per month as an accommodation contribution.
Medical insurance. Health care under Hungarian regulations, plus supplementary medical insurance.
A large number of English-taught programmes. Around 900 full-degree programmes are available, many delivered in English.
Access to respected Hungarian universities. Study at leading Hungarian institutions across engineering, sciences, medicine, business, humanities, and the arts.
European degree recognition. A Hungarian degree supports academic and professional mobility across Europe, subject to the specific field and recognition framework.
Open to Kazakhstan. The programme operates through official sending partners, and Kazakhstan is among the supported partner countries.
  • Who It's For
    • citizens of partner countries and territories, including Kazakhstan, applying through the sending-partner system
    • school leavers applying for Bachelor's programmes, Bachelor's graduates applying for Master's, and Master's graduates applying for PhD study
    • applicants who will be at least 18 years old by 31 August 2026, with limited exceptions for certain dance programmes
    • candidates with a solid academic background and the language qualifications required by their chosen programme
    • applicants prepared for a two-stage process: nomination by the sending partner, followed by institutional evaluation by a Hungarian university
    • candidates ready for entrance examinations where the selected university requires them
  • Age Range
Stipendium Hungaricum does not impose a broad upper age limit for most standard degree routes. The key requirement in the 2026/27 cycle is that applicants must be at least 18 years old by 31 August 2026, with a limited exception for certain dance programmes.

Some sending partners may apply additional national rules, so local requirements should always be checked alongside the central programme criteria.
When to Start
Ideally, preparation should begin 6–9 months before the application deadline
This gives you enough time to:
  • identify your two preferred programmes
  • confirm the requirements of the sending partner in Kazakhstan
  • prepare academic documents and translations
  • secure language proof if required by your programme
  • write a strong motivation letter
  • prepare for university entrance examinations if your programme includes them
A workable minimum is 3–4 months, if your documents are already in order and your target programmes are clear.
Important: Stipendium Hungaricum requires two parallel tracks of submission — an online application through the official scholarship portal, and compliance with the nomination process of your sending partner. Only nominated applicants advance to the institutional evaluation stage.

For the 2026/27 cycle, partner-side nomination lists are forwarded by 28 February 2026, with some country-specific sending-partner deadlines falling as early as 30 January 2026. Always verify the current Kazakhstan-specific deadline directly with the relevant sending partner.
What's Included / How We Build the Path
Positioning and Strategy
At Lumos, we see Stipendium Hungaricum as one of the most practical European scholarship routes for students seeking a fully funded degree within the EU.

The combination of benefits — tuition waiver, monthly stipend, accommodation support, health insurance, and access to a large number of English-taught programmes — makes it broader in coverage than many comparable scholarships.

It's also important to understand how the selection actually works. This isn't a single application review. It's a dual-stage process: first, screening or nomination through the sending partner; then, evaluation by the Hungarian host institution. Both stages matter, and both need to be prepared for.

Our strategy focuses on three things.
  • First, eligibility discipline. We verify that your nationality, documents, and academic background align with the programme rules before anything else.
  • Second, smart programme selection. You can only rank two programmes — so every choice carries real weight.
  • Third, motivation and readiness. Strong applicants don't just submit documents. They show genuine fit, clear direction, and real preparedness for academic study in Hungary.

One thing worth being transparent about: for Bachelor's and Master's students, the financial package may not cover every personal expense in full, depending on the city and individual lifestyle. For doctoral students, the support is considerably stronger. That distinction matters when planning realistically.
